About NAVMAT

	The NAVMAT Dragons Team - September 2011

The NAVMAT Dragon Boat Racing Club was formed during the 1992/93 Dragon Boat racing season by members of the former Naval Material (NAVMAT) Social Club in the Department of Defence, Canberra. It was initially developed as a sporting aspect to the social club and was then known then as the NAVMAT Social Club team. A departmental reshuffle saw the work area disbanded and so went the social club. As a consequence, it was thought that the dragon boat club would cease to exist. Fortunately some key members of the club kept the legacy left by the social club alive and it became NAVMAT Dragons Inc, also known as the NAVMAT Dragonboat Racing Club. Our Club now recruits members from throughout the Canberra community to develop racing teams that compete locally, nationally and internationally.

The NAVMAT Dragon Boat Racing Club is one of the founding members of the Canberra Dragon Boat Association and it has two life members still amongst its ranks, who both recently representated Australia at the 2011 World Dragon Boat Championship in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. They were among 5 members of our Club to be selected for the Australian team.
