Member Comments:

Here are some comments from a few current NAVMAT Members that are passionate about the sport and how they got into dragon boat racing in the first place:

"Dragon Boat racing provides opportunities for the not so serious to the serious competitor to race locally, nationally and internationally, this is where you can paddle bringing together a team of paddlers and travel around Australia to various competitions and overseas or if you want to be serious you can be part of a state or territory team and even paddle for Australia...............now that is something.

I started with Capital Dragon 1992 and represented Australia in China 1992. I joined Navmat in 1999 after my club Capital Dragons folded.

Over the years Navmat has grown in knowledge and technology. I am always inspired to see new members coming into the club to bring new and fresh ideas. It is the members in the club that make the club enjoyable, fun, challenging and it has given me the opportunity to bring the fun to the social functions."

Michele Moroney, Life Member of CDBA / 11 Years with NAVMAT Dragons Canberra when the club was first formed.

"I needed a sport that was fun, social and would develop my fitness - Navmat was the answer. I joined in September 2010 and have been hooked since. I am now in my second season of the sport and am still enjoying it as much as I did when I started! My fitness has improved greatly and have made a bunch of new friends in the process."

James Southwell, 2nd Year with NAVMAT Dragons, Canberra

"I was introduced to the sport of Dragon Boat Paddling three years ago through a friend of my sisters. It was the warm friendly and inviting people of Navmat that twisted my arm in staying with the club for these three years. I also joined Navmat to improve my fitness.

I have traveled to Adelaide, Jindabyne, and Merimbula with the club where racing against interstate teams has been challenging and very rewarding. It is amazing how a sporting team can bring out one's competitive streak particularly when racing against other local and interstate clubs.

Since joining the Navmat club I became involved with and am assisting the social secretary in social activities some of which have included outings to the theatre, winery visits, Golden Awards Presentation nights and the annual Christmas party.

Come along, try you wont be disappointed!"

Tim Gowty, 4th Year withNAVMAT Dragons, Canberra.
